Veterinarians’ observations and scientific research may suggest correlations between certain dog food ingredients, taurine deficiency and canine dilated cardiomyopathy, in addition to risks imparted by genetics. This potential evidence led to the United States Food and Drug Administration’s investigation of cases of canine dilated cardiomyopathy that may be correlated to dog food diets high in legumes or potatoes, particularly grain-free dog foods. Mercury levels in pet food to be studied in new project

The research is being supported by crowdfunding.

After mercury was found in pet food in a 2016 research project at the University of Nevada, Reno, a new team is taking a closer look to quantify the concentration level of methylmercury, the toxic mercury compound that can have negative health impacts. Preliminary analyses of a few dog food samples showed methylmercury to be a significant percentage of the total mercury. Read more.
