Recalled dog foods had up to 70 times intended vitamin D

On December 3, the F.D.A. has issued a warning to consumers about the numerous dog food recalls related to excessive levels of vitamin D.

On December 3, the United States Food and Drug Administration issued a warning to consumers about numerous dog food recalls related to excessive levels of vitamin D. Sunshine Mills, a co-packer or contract manufacturer, seems to have produced all the recalled dog foods, although the pet foods were marketed under different names. After grain-free, watch human diets for pet food trends

There is no guarantee that pet owners will continue seeking out diets without corn, wheat and other grains.

Five years ago, dog and cat food makers couldn’t always find reliable, constant sources for some grain-free pet food ingredients as demand surged, said Isaac Matthews, director of pet food ingredients for Lansing Trade Group in a video from Petfood Forum 2018 (see below). Now, although these ingredients may be more reliably available, there is no guarantee that pet owners will continue seeking out diets without corn, wheat and other grains. Instead, pet food companies may find the next hot trend in pet food by monitoring what’s popular with people, and thereby be ready for a demand spike. Read more.
